Mossberg is the other half of America's pump shotgun tradition, and the 500 and 590 have been in service and behind counters for generations. The tang safety — thumb-operated on top, usable left-handed — is a genuinely better arrangement than the competition.

The Shockwave and its relatives occupy an odd, legal, and popular corner of the market, and the 930 and 940 semi-autos have become serious competition guns. Little of the range is expensive and most of it is hard to kill.
