A semi-automatic shotgun cycles itself, which cuts felt recoil substantially and speeds up follow-up shots. On a high-volume dove or waterfowl day that recoil reduction is not a luxury — it is the difference between shooting well at the end of the day and flinching.

Gas-operated actions bleed off propellant gas to work the action, which softens recoil most but needs cleaning to stay reliable. Inertia-driven actions use recoil energy, run far cleaner, and kick noticeably more. Both need enough cartridge power to cycle, so check the minimum load your model requires before buying light target shells or reduced-recoil defensive ammunition.
