Semi-automatic rifles cover an enormous range of purposes, from the AR-15 as a general-purpose carbine to .22 rimfires for cheap practice to gas-operated hunting rifles. What they share is a self-loading action, and what that buys is fast follow-up shots.

The AR-15 dominates for reasons beyond the rifle itself: parts are standardised, uppers swap in seconds, and the aftermarket is deeper than for any other platform. Direct impingement is lighter and more accurate; a piston system runs cleaner and suits suppressed use. Check what your state permits before ordering — feature restrictions and magazine limits vary considerably and your dealer applies them at transfer.
