Rifle and shotgun components range from bolt-on to bench work, and the AR-15 is the reason this category is as large as it is. Its components are standardised well enough that most upgrades are a matter of pushing out two pins, which is not true of most other platforms.

Beyond the AR, headspace is the concept that governs what is safe to swap. Bolts, barrel extensions and barrels interact in ways that determine whether a cartridge is properly supported at firing, and a bolt from one rifle dropped into another of the same model is not automatically correct. Anything touching the bolt or barrel on a non-AR platform wants a gunsmith and a set of headspace gauges.
